The Journey to Bilingual Typography

Marcus Lam didn’t start out as a typography specialist. In 2010, he was a graphic designer in Hong Kong working on traditional branding projects. But something about the gap between how Chinese and English text worked together—the spacing issues, the line height mismatches, the awkward headers—fascinated him. He realized most designers weren’t solving these problems; they were ignoring them.

That frustration became fuel. After five years at a local design consultancy, he made the leap to study typography formally at the Royal College of Art in London. It wasn’t just learning rules. It was understanding the philosophy behind typeface design, the history of scripts, and how cultures read differently. When he came back to Hong Kong, he didn’t want to work on anything but bilingual systems.

For the past seven years at TypeSync Hong Kong Limited, Marcus has been exactly where he wants to be—solving the problems he once struggled with. He’s designed typographic systems for over 120 brands across Hong Kong and Asia. He’s published research on mixed-script spacing standards. He conducts workshops for designers and developers. And he’s become known for one thing: if your Hong Kong website needs typography that actually works for both scripts, you call Marcus.

What drives him? The belief that typography isn’t decoration. It’s infrastructure. Good typography means your site works for everyone—local readers and international visitors. It means accessibility. It means your content is readable, clear, and professional. And in Hong Kong, where we’re always bilingual, that matters.

What Marcus Does

Five areas where he’s built deep expertise in bilingual web typography

Chinese-English Font Pairing

Selecting typefaces that harmonize across Traditional Chinese and Latin scripts. Not just matching them visually—making them work together with proper weight, proportion, and rhythm on the same line.

Mixed-Script Line Height & Spacing

Managing the technical challenge of line height when characters have different proportions. Traditional Chinese text sits differently than Latin text. Marcus knows how to balance this so everything looks intentional.

Readability Across Both Systems

Ensuring every visitor—whether they’re reading Chinese or English first—gets a consistent, comfortable reading experience. This means testing across screen sizes, browsers, and real-world conditions.

Multilingual Header Design

Creating headers that work for both local and international audiences. It’s not just translation—it’s rethinking hierarchy, scale, and emphasis so your message lands in both languages equally well.

Typographic Systems & Standards

Building reusable systems that scale across entire websites. Variables for font sizes, weights, spacing—all designed to work seamlessly across scripts. Documented, tested, and ready for developers.

Web Font Selection & Testing

Choosing fonts that actually perform well on the web—covering both Traditional Chinese web fonts and Latin typefaces. Testing across browsers, devices, and real-world network conditions.

Why Typography Matters

“Typography isn’t about making things look pretty. It’s about making things readable. And in Hong Kong, where we’re always moving between Chinese and English, that’s a real technical problem that needs real solutions.”

— Marcus Lam

Marcus believes that thoughtful typography is the foundation of good design. Not decoration. Not an afterthought. Foundation. When your typography works—when the line height feels right, when the spacing makes sense, when readers don’t have to work to understand what they’re reading—everything else gets better.

He’s particularly focused on Hong Kong because it’s uniquely challenging. We’re not choosing between one script or the other. We’re using both. Every website, every brand, every communication needs to work in both languages. Most design systems ignore this. They treat it like an afterthought. Marcus treats it like the core problem to solve.

His approach is practical. He doesn’t believe in theoretical perfection. He believes in systems that work in real browsers, on real devices, for real readers. That’s why he tests everything. That’s why his work gets adopted. And that’s why so many Hong Kong brands trust him to get their typography right.
